21st July – 31st August 2019 – Opening: Saturday 20th July h 18.00
Palazzo Ducale, Sala del Munizioniere, Piazza Matteotti, Genova
Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 18:00, Art Commission in collaboration with Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura inaugurates the fourth edition of the Biennale of Contemporary Art “Le Latitudini dell’Arte”. The exhibition, conceived and curated by Virginia Monteverde and presented this year by
art critic Viana Conti, is sponsored by the Liguria Region, the City of Genoa and the Embassy of the Netherlands.
The Biennale was born in 2013 with the aim of promoting and encouraging the artistic and cultural exchange between Italy and other European countries. This fourth edition, which has as its theme “Water and Light”, sees the participation of 60 artists who live and work in Italy and the Netherlands. As in previous editions, the artists have been selected thanks to the collaboration of Galleries and
Foundations of both countries.
“At the linguistic level, multimediality and the fluid state of the social fabric of post-modernity, as theorized by the political scientist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman, recursively connote the artisticchoices of the broad cultural landscape delineated by the curator. In an age of globalization
and of the de-aestheticization of art versus a widespread aestheticization of the commodity as fetish, our advanced capitalist society inevitably shows signs of tension, with its resolved and unresolved conflicts, its migratory flows, its desperate journeys of hope, its ecological degradation or recovery, its questions open to the present and the future. The scenario resulting from a selective panorama of thirty Dutch and an equal number of Italian artists clearly reflects the signs, symptoms, openings and closures of the horizon, which every artist, as a sensitive creative seismograph of the surrounding context, projects into his or her work.”
(from the text by Viana Conti taken from the exhibition catalogue published by Liberodiscrivere)
The 2019 edition of the Biennale Le Latitudini dell’arte also, in alliance with the circuit of the Museums of Genoa, invites visitors who come to the exhibition to follow the itinerary “Netherlands and Flanders – The Latitudes of Art in Genoa of the Past” that winds through the Palace Royal, Musei di Strada Nuova, National Gallery of Palazzo Spinola and Trust (Prince’s Villa).
